Disclaimer

This book is intended as an educational reference volume only, to help readers make their own investigations and to develop and make their own informed decisions. The author, editor, endorsers, sponsors, partners, publisher, and their families or heirs hold no responsibility for any detrimental effects whatsoever resulting from the use of diatomaceous earth (DE), or the brand or quality of DE chosen by the user. The responsibility rests solely with the discretion of the user. The author is not responsible for any omissions, errors, or misunderstandings about DE. Laws and discoveries surrounding this substance may change at any time and may need to be updated in future editions.

Although the author has used DE for nearly 20 years, she has not personally tried or tested all methods, brands, and uses of DE as mentioned herein, some of which may be the experience of other users. Some of the information gathered is a collection of anecdotal experiences from other DE users, comprehensive scientific reports, and documentation from a variety of research material, references, and comments from other sources, including miners, geologists, and competitive experts in this field. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the sources of this information are credible and accurate. Individual testing methods, results and opinions may vary.

Any references to commercial products or trade names are made with the understanding that no discrimination is intended and no endorsement by the publisher, author, editor, or sponsors is implied. There are many manufacturers with varying printed documents, qualities of DE mine deposits, and mining, manufacturing, production methods and products. The author recommends using only food-grade diatomaceous earth. Wherever food-grade DE is mentioned in this book, it is written with the assumption that the consumer has taken the responsibility upon him or herself to be prudent and thoroughly research the brand to buy and use, and to make sure it does indeed meet EPA registration, or the FDA’s “Food Chemical Codex” criteria, and the “GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe)” standards.

To check on the quality of DE, the consumer needs to deal directly with the manufacturer, distributor, or retail representatives and ask to view the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and mineral analysis. Users of any DE product should not rely solely on the suggestions in this book, and must carefully read and follow all label and packaging instructions when using the animal feed additive, anticaking agent, “Food Chemical Codex,” inert carrier, grain storage protectant, or any brand of DE insecticide, internal antiparasitic, or nutritional supplement. The DE referred to in this book is not a toxic chemical but a naturally occurring mineral known as amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) also referred to as silica in powdered form.

Each person can explore the dozens of tips provided in this book and determine what works best for his or her own specific needs. Anyone wishing to treat animals or birds for internal parasites should seek professional advice from a veterinarian who is familiar with the use of DE. To date, in the United States, clinical research studies on general human ingestion as a nutritional supplement have not been done.

Neither have these statements and tips been evaluated by the FDA. They are not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease. It is strongly advised that anyone wishing to ingest food-grade DE as an antiparasitic, intestinal cleanser, detoxifier, or trace mineral supplement should check with the company that manufactures or sells DE for ingestion regarding its food-grade quality and directions. The consumer should also seek the advice of a medical or nutrition professional who is a skilled and knowledgeable practitioner in this field. The author is not in the business of providing personal consultation, but is acting as a researcher and writer to report on what others are doing and what is going on in this world of DE. Opinions vary, but as the reader’s knowledge base and practical experiences broaden, he or she will be able to make informed decisions about this amazing, ancient mineral provided by Mother Nature.
